Playing Marathon Participant with ALS Set Goal to Finish Races in All 50 States

The Doctors are pleased to welcome Andrea, an inspiration and reminder to always live life to the fullest, no matter what you are dealing with.

The inspiring woman was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at 33, but 7 years later she is working hard to accomplish an incredible goal - to cycle in a marathon in all 50 states.

She tells The Doctors, "I was tired of waiting around for this disease to kill me," and set her inspiring goal into motion. So far, Andrea has cycled in 35 races and 25 marathons since her diagnosis. She says she is most excited to cycle in Alaska.

"I realized I had no more time to waste and I had to live each day to the fullest," Andrea says. Her husband David shares during their journey, his wife has been able to inspire others living with ALS to continue to live, whether it's competing in a 5K or just getting up off the couch. "She's looking outside of herself and strengthening the world and community around her... ALS has taken a lot from us and a lot from other families, but I don't know if ALS knew what it had in store when it met Andrea."

Andrea’s doctor, neurologist Dr. Richard Bedlack believes we are closer than we have ever been to possibly finding a cure to ALS, noting the Ice Bucket challenge helped to raise money to better understand the cause of the disease, explaining more than 30 different genes that can cause ALS have been identified. He is hopeful advances in gene therapy may lead to better treatment in the next few years.

Andrea shares a message for everyone, "You never know how long you have or how far you can go, treat every day as a gift."

Find out more about Andrea and her foundation which is working to fund research to help find a cure for ALS.
