Playing How to Find Laughter in a Crisis

We could all use more laughter right now and The Doctors welcome back the hosts of Alec Mapa: Hot Mess with Matthew Dempsey Psychotherapist to share why in these hard pandemic times that finding humor is crucial.

Alec notes that laughter is believed to release endorphins and helps people tolerate pain -- something practically all of us can benefit from right now. Alec and Matthew say laughter and humor are needed even when dealing with serious issues.

"Mental health and emotional wellbeing do not have to seem so serious. The more we can inject some humor and levity into it the better, " Matthew says, noting we can still do important work and practice self-care while finding the humor in life.

Alec adds, "Humor is how we bend. If you can't laugh at life, if you can't bend, you're going to break," noting that even in the most difficult times of his life (growing up and being bullied) he still found the humor in it.

They also suggest surrounding yourself with humorous people to help lift you up and they note something important: it is also okay to not feel okay. Matthew stresses that if humor is not a part of your life right now to remember it will likely return in the future
