It's estimated that more than 50% of women experience noticeable hair loss, but how do you know if your hair is falling out at a higher rate? You might see more hair fall out daily on your brush, the floor, in the shower, or on your pillows. You might see noticeable patches of missing hair or your part may get wider, or see your scalp through your hair.
What causes hair loss? There are three main types of hair loss: Anagen effluvium, telogen effluvium, and female pattern hair loss or FPHL.
- Anagen effluvium is caused by medications like chemotherapy that poison a growing hair follicle
- Telogen effluvium is caused by an increased number of hair follicles reaching the telogen phase, which is the stage where hair falls out. This can happen due to fluctuating weight, hormones, and stress.
- Female pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia is the most common. Hair thins over the top of the head and on the sides.
Ricki Lake recently opened up to The Doctors about her battle with hair loss that was brought about by fluctuations in weight and stressful periods in her life. She also thinks years spent on hormonal birth control has contributed to her hair falling out. Ricki shares, "You actually can feel the hair shedding. In the shower, there'd be a clump of hair in the drain, it would cause almost PTSD," candidly adding that nothing helped her until she found Harklinikken.
While any woman at any age can lose her hair, it's most common for:
- Women over 40
- Women who have recently given birth
- Women who have had chemotherapy and those who have been affected by other medications
- Women who often have hairstyles that pull on the hair (like tight ponytails or tight braids) or use harsh chemicals on their hair
- Menopausal women
Are you worried your hair may be thinning? There are lots of things you can do to help maintain the health of the hair follicle, but what are your options to actually regrow hair? The Doctors have rounded up some popular treatments, starting with Ricki Lake's favorite -- and they are all available online.
