The Doctors discuss the photo of a woman who looks to have a swollen lip. You’ll never guess what’s causing the swelling… inside, there’s a worm! Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra explains this woman has a parasitic roundworm that is transferred by the bite of a mosquito. This usually infects dogs or cats but this woman is believed to be bitten by a mosquito carrying the worm outside of Moscow.
The woman had taken other selfies which show that initially, the bump started above her eye. Then, five days later it transferred to below her eye, and in ten days, it was in her lip! She finally went to see an ophthalmologist who diagnosed her with the parasitic roundworm and removed it using forceps.
The Doctors share an image of the worm which is about six inches long but Dr. Batra says sometimes they can reach up to 30 centimeters in length when they are inside their normal hosts like cats and dogs!
