The US Surgeon General Recommendations for Keeping Kids Safe from COVID-19

COVID-19 cases have been surging in children as kids across the United States are heading back to the classroom. With many schools heading back into quarantine weeks into the school year, how can you help to keep your kid safe? CNN shares recommendations from the US Surgeon General to ensure a safer environment for your kids, which includes wearing a mask that fits properly, well ventilated spaces, and regular testing of the school community.

There is a misconception that kids don't have to worry about COVID, but with the Delta variant surging, more kids are getting sick. "Even though our kids do better, that doesn't mean that Covid is benign, it doesn't mean that it's harmless in our children," Dr. Vivek Murthy said in a conversation hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation. In fact, the idea that kids are not in danger is keeping some from getting vaccinated.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines have been fully approved by the FDA for children 16 and older, and emergency authorization are approved for children 12 and up. The next group up for approval covers children from 5 to 11 years old, which may happen before the end of 2021.

On top of vaccinations, people are increasingly getting infected, and while there are still many unvaccinated people in the US, over time we may build up a natural immunity to COVID. The Doctors strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to get vaccinated to do so ASAP -- especially if you live in a state with low vaccination rates. According to The Mayo Clinic's COVID-19 vaccine tracker, these states have the fewest percentage of people fully vaccinated:

  • Alabama - 36.8%
  • Mississippi - 37.2%
  • Wyoming - 38.1%
  • Idaho - 38.7%
  • West Virginia - 39.5%
  • Arkansas - 40.1%
  • Louisiana - 40.2%
  • Georgia - 40.4%
  • Tennessee - 41%
  • North Dakota - 41.2%
