The low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet is very popular, yet there has been a recent, not-so-good downside being reported by the diet’s followers: "keto crotch." Yes, women who are on the ketogenic diet have been writing on the internet that the diet has caused a bizarre vaginal odor.
OB/GYN Dr. Nita Landry explains, at this point, there is no scientific evidence to confirm or deny these claims. There are, however, some theories. When you eat something different it can change the vaginal pH and that change can alter the odor. ER physician Dr. Travis Stork points out one side effect of the diet is “ketone breathe,” which seems similar to the other issue women have been reporting.
Dr. Travis reminds viewers to do their research before starting a new diet. Find out if it’s safe, right for you, and if there are potential side effects. If keto crotch is a potential side effect of the ketogenic diet, “It’s not worth it!” exclaims Dr. Travis.
Dr. Nita’s main concern with these claims is that women may think their vaginal odor is due to the keto diet when in fact it is an infection that needs to be treated. That being said, smell something, say something!
Vaginas do have odors and Dr. Nita wants women to be realistic about that. “It’s not a rose garden!” she comments. To stay healthy, women should keep their vaginas clean, dry, and less is more; don’t douche because it could wash away good bacteria. As Dr. Travis says, “Your vagina is a self-cleaning oven!”
