Some new moms save their baby's placenta and then eat it, add it to food, or take it in pill form for its supposed health benefits, but should women really be doing this?
The Doctors welcome disease detective Dr. Seema Yasmin, the author of “Viral BS: Medical Myths and Why We Fall For Them,” to weigh in on this medical myth.
Dr. Yasmin explains the idea of eating a placenta is -- in part -- due to celebrities like Kim Kardashian swearing that it helped her postpartum recovery and actress January Jones, who claims it helped her with postpartum depression. Dr. Yasmin explains people have even created recipes for smoothies, lasagna, and chocolate truffles that contain placenta.
But before you begin cooking up a placenta-infused meal, Dr. Yasmin warns, "The research does not support what the celebs are saying." She worries that new moms might think eating the placenta will somehow prevent them from developing something serious like postpartum depression. If you are experiencing postpartum depression, please seek care from your doctor or medical provider.
She also notes eating the placenta can lead to a possible bacteria infection, which she says new moms can potentially pass on to their newborns.
