In the U.S. more than 1 in 3 adults are considered overweight. However, it’s never too late to turn your health around and one viewer, Ken, proves that point!
Ken says he had problems with his weight his entire life and when he reached over 570 pounds, he was told he had 5 months to live. As a single dad to a 3-year-old daughter, he was motivated to save his own life. He began going to the gym and when he discovered the ketogenic diet, the weight began to fall off. He went to The Vitamin Shoppe almost daily for their knowledge and advice. Ken lost nearly 400 pounds and is now the father he wants to be for his daughter.
Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra is joined by Dr. Jacob Wilson, a member of The Vitamin Shoppe Wellness Council, to discuss the ketogenic diet. Dr. Wilson explains on this diet you are essentially reducing your carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fats. Your meals are 70-80% fat, about 20% protein, and 5% carbohydrate. “When you switch to this diet you can actually increase metabolism, improve muscle mass and you fight the hardest part about dieting, which is hunger,” Dr. Wilson says.
Dr. Batra explains when you eat this way, your body produces ketone bodies from the fat which are used for energy.
On this diet, the foods you eat will be mainly proteins and healthy fats. Foods allowed on the ketogenic diet include:
- Fibrous Vegetables
Dr. Batra notes it’s not just food and diet but also motivation which plays a part in successful weight loss. To help with this factor, The Vitamin Shoppe has launched its Keto HQ, a one-stop shop for products and education to help keto dieters achieve their goals. The Vitamin Shoppe wanted to reward Ken for his commitment to his health so The Doctors sent Dr. Holly Philips to deliver this news!
Dr. Philips is joined by Dr. Wilson and Claire Simmons, a health enthusiast at Ken’s local The Vitamin Shoppe. “Ken is in here almost every single day getting the supplements and advice he needs and I’m very happy to be a part of his journey!” Claire says. Dr. Wilson explains Ken is part of The Vitamin Shoppe’s newly relaunched loyalty program. The Vitamin Shoppe wants to make health and wellness an affordable priority and their new Healthy Awards loyalty program allows customers to earn points that go toward purchases based on the amount they spend. At higher levels, individuals can gain access to nutrition experts and a community of people with shared goals.
Ken was nominated as a standout Healthy Awards member so The Vitamin Shoppe is honoring his achievements by giving him a monetary gift to put toward his nursing school expenses and to do something special with his daughter, a one-year membership to the gym of his choice and 25,000 Healthy Awards points for a total prize value of $5,000!
The Doctors are thrilled for Ken and hope he inspires others. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or starting a weight-loss program.
