Korea is a hotbed of beauty trends and The Doctors are checking out some Korean Konjac sponges. These are derived from the root of a plant found in Asia. They are natural exfoliating sponges and they are a buzz! Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra says they need to be soaked first but once they are, they are the right amount of exfoliation. They aren’t too harsh that they will cause inflammation or irritation but they are ideal for sluffing off dry, dull skin.
The sponges are compostable and biodegradable. Dr. Batra recommends using them for about a month before disposing of them. After use, she says to press them flat, squeeze out the remaining water, and hang to air dry. ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says they are like a step up from a loofa!
The sponges also come in different colors because they have different properties. There is a dark gray one which contains charcoal. Dr. Batra recommends this one for Travis’ makeup-covered face! For people with more sensitive skin, she would recommend the red one, which contains red clay, which is anti-inflammatory. But would she also spread a cleansing balm on her face?
Nope. This is a bust for Dr. Batra. She says these balms feel like you are rubbing your face with Chapstick and they are really hard to remove. Dr. Batra tried three different types and felt the same way about all of them. For someone like her who has acne-prone skin, these balms would sit there and clog her pores.
She says these balms may have a place in a dry environment in the depths of winter because they won’t dry you out but they're definitely not for everybody.
