The Doctors welcome physical therapist Karen Joubert to discuss how the way someone sits throughout the day (are you slouching or slumping while reading this article?) might be affecting your body and health.

Karen explains that someone's posture and breathing is fundamental to our health and without proper posture, it can lead to a "poor foundation" in the body. She calls excessive sitting an "epidemic" and notes it can cause health issues like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

For proper posture, Karen says body alignment is key and that when standing someone's ear should be aligned with the bottom of their ankle. Some easy ways to improve their posture, according to Karen, include:

  • Not letting your head hang forward, especially while looking at your phone or computer
  • Holding your shoulders back and aligning them with your hips when standing, walking and sitting
  • Keeping your belly button flush with your spin and avoid sucking in your stomach as this can cause damage to the diaphragm
  • Avoid standing on one leg and always equally distribute your weight on each foot

She explains everyone should "stand tall and walk with confidence." Karen says if this technique is practiced it will carry over into how someone sits and can help to alleviate neck and back pain that some people experience due to poor posture.

Also, check out the simple at-home technique Karen recommends anyone can do to improve posture, in the video below.
