But how often is your home equipment getting wiped down and sanitized? Just because you may not be sharing equipment with fellow gym-goers does not mean that bacteria is not living on your weights, yoga mats, and jump rope handles.

She took swab samples from three different types of gyms, from inexpensive to high-end to get tested at a lab. First, use a microfiber towel and an all-purpose disinfecting cleaning spray and steer clear of harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia and alcohol.
To clean your yoga mat, spray your mat and let the spray sit for a few minutes. Wipe dry with the microfiber towel. Be sure your mat is completely dry before rolling it back up. Follow the same instructions for your free weights and let air dry before putting them away. For bigger equipment, first unplug machines like bikes, treadmills and ellipticals. For the display screens on the equipment use a glass cleaner and a microfiber wipe, and on higher touch areas like handlebars and the seat you can use an all-purpose disinfecting spray.
