Dr. Ordon met up with Dr. Frauke Neuser, Olay principal scientist, to help answer a viewer’s question. Marnae wants to know if it’s okay for her to skip moisturizers after she washes her face. She says that all the moisturizers she has tried have left her skin looking greasy and oily.

Dr. Neuser hears the same concerns from many women with oily skin, shine and visible pores. She says many of them say their skin feels heavy or sticky after applying moisturizers. However, she says all skin types need to be moisturized.

When Marnae asks why she has such oily skin, Dr. Ordon explains there are many reasons why a person could have oily skin including genetics and hormonal changes, or imbalances. Our pores have sebaceous glands which produce sebum, an oil that moistens the skin. Too much sebum equals excess oiliness. Some studies show that an increase in sebum production happens during the spring and summer as well as in some humid climates.

Dr. Ordon adds that the skincare products we choose play an important role in skin composition too. He advises washing your face every morning, evening and after exercise with a gentle foaming face wash. A face wash that is too harsh can irritate skin and increase oil production.

Dr. Neuser suggests that Marnae should add a moisturizer that absorbs quickly to her skincare routine. Dr. Neuser, spokesperson for Olay, suggests one that controls oil and shine while allowing the skin to breathe. Her recommendation is Olay Regenerist Whip, available at Walgreens.
