Chances are you and your entire family are feeling burnt out right now, and The Doctors are sharing tips that can help you better cope with at-home pandemic stress.
Dr. Sheryl Zeigler, author of “Mommy Burnout,” tells Dr. Ian Smith she is seeing entire families being affected by burn out related to COVID-19 and the changes and restrictions everyone is having to endure. She explains it can be particularly tough for children explaining they will often sleep during remote classes, have trouble paying attention, have issues staying connected to other kids, and even instances of regression -- like bedwetting and separation anxiety.
She says these issues are tied to grief and says we are all grieving the life we once had and feeling down about the life events that have been put on hold.
So how can parents and families better cope with feelings burnt out? Dr. Zeigler suggests:
- Lean into your support systems: This could be another family (from your pandemic pod) or an extended family member to help with the kids.
- Establish a schedule: She explains this is a signal to the body that everything is in order and not having a schedule can create excess stress.
- Redefine self-care: Taking care of your needs might be different now, and she stresses people still need to identify what recharges them.
- Nurture friendships: She says kids should be connecting with other kids every day in some way either via a video chat, phone call, or a safe and socially distanced outdoor visit.
