The Doctors continue to bring you possibly life-saving information during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and breast cancer specialist Dr. Kristi Funk reveals the 4 most important ways to lower your risk.
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetime and Dr. Funk shares tips that may help you detect the disease and possibly prevent it.
- Dr. Funk explains 50 percent of women have dense breast tissue (breast tissue is divided into 4 density categories) and those in the highest 2 density categories should be getting a 3-D mammogram, which is better at detecting issues
- Women with implants and women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer (those with a family history, past biopsies, or those with a gene mutation) need to have a whole breast screening ultrasound
- Women who are at the highest risk, should undergo a breast MRI
Dr. Funk also stresses that a person's lifestyle also plays a major role in breast cancer risk and she lays out the 4 most important ways to reduce risk, which include:
- Eating a whole food plant-based diet, limiting processed foods, meat, dairy, and simple sugars
