They note as these items become scarce, people's lives are negatively impacted when they cannot find them in the store. Below are 7 foods they suggest to avoid buying right now, as others might need them more.

Frozen Berries: These are important for people with kidney conditions, as potassium and phosphorus (which are high in plant-based foods) are hard on the kidneys. But, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and cranberries are low in these minerals, making them safe for these patients. 

Instead buy: Peaches, melon, tangerines, grapefruit, and kiwis

Coconut Oil: This food is vital for people with liver disease, gallbladder disease. It is easier on the liver or gallbladder when compared to other types of fats.

Instead buy: Palm kernel oil

Gluten-Free Foods that are Certified: These certified gluten-free items are important for people with celiac disease. If those with celiac disease consume items containing gluten, it can lead to immediate GI tract discomfort, injury, or inflammation of the small intestine.

Instead buy: Products labeled gluten-free but that don’t bear the full certification

Nutritional Shakes: These drinks are important for people with COPD and cancer. Those with the inflammatory lung disease burn calories at a much higher rate due to heavy breathing and people undergoing chemotherapy might have trouble with appetite loss, weight loss, and nausea. These people often use nutritional shakes to help maintain their weight and to make sure they are getting ample nutrition. 

Instead make: Smoothies with protein powder

Whole Milk: This is an important drink for those with COPD, who need to make sure they meet their high calorie and fat needs.

Instead buy: Lower-fat milk or a milk alternative like almond milk

Rice or Oat Milk: This food is vital for people with gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, because of their impaired ability to digest fats. These times of milk alternatives are easier on their system and can help avoid gastrointestinal distress and inflammation.

Low-Sodium Foods: These types of foods are important for those with chronic kidney conditions, lung diseases, hypertension, and high blood pressure. Due to the high demand of some canned items, shoppers are opting for the low-sodium version if the standard option is not available, which leaves the people who need them the most with no options.
