He has created the Barstool Fund, which more than 205,000 people have contributed to and has raised more than 32 million. The fund has come to the aid of 190 businesses.
Dave tells us the repeated shutdowns in many areas and the closing of indoor dining "felt like a deathblow" and he challenged himself to channel his frustrations into a way to help people affected.
"The people who should have been helping weren't... we can't lose these places, they are part of this country. And I'm glad we're able to help some of them, [but] not enough," Dave tells The Doctors. In addition to restaurants, the Barstool Fund has been able to help small retail establishments and The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
He explains the fund looks for 2 things when deciding who to help: a proven successful track record and businesses that kept their payroll active to the best of their abilities. The fund has also pledged to continue to support these businesses month after month if needed.
In the video below, Frank Borrelli, the owner of Borrelli’s restaurant in Long Island, New York, shares how the Barstool Fund has helped to keep his business alive during this harrowing time. He says the support he has received is "the greatest thing that has ever happened to me and Borrelli’s."
