The Doctors demonstrate what to do if you see someone choking.
For choking adults:
- From behind, wrap your arms around the victim's mid-section.
- Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into their upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Do not squeeze the ribcage; confine the force of the thrust to your hands.
- Repeat until object is expelled.
For choking infants:
- Lay child down, face up on a firm surface and kneel or stand at child’s feet, or hold child on your lap facing away from you.
- Place the middle and index fingers of both hands below the child’s rib cage and above the navel.
- Press into child’s upper abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Do not squeeze the ribcage.
- Repeat until object is expelled.
Note: Don’t slap the child's back, as it could cause the stuck object to become further lodged.
