Liposuction, a surgical procedure that removes fat from targeted areas of the body, has been around since the early 1970s. Over the years, surgeons have honed and perfected the treatment. The cost of the procedure can range from $3,000 to $10,000, and recovery time is one to two weeks.

Body Tite Procedure
The latest version of liposuction, Body Tite, heats fat while removing it. "It's liposuction," plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Davis explains, "but it incorporates radiofrequency energy, causing the fat cells to dissolve, but at the same time, you're also tightening the skin."

Denise, 52, has had five children and has tried everything, from dieting to exercise, to get rid of her back fat. Dr. Davis demonstrates how BodyTite works and performs the procedure on Denise.

Body Tite is currently performed in the European Union and Canada and is in clinical trials in the United States.

Water-Assisted Liposuction
Three years ago, Dawn, now 38, underwent liposuction to help her achieve the body shape she desired. “It wasn’t for any weight loss,” she says. “It was wanting to have more of a feminine waistline, have a flatter stomach.”

While she was unsatisfied with the results , Dawn’s physician said there was nothing more that he could do to improve it. “I lived with the dissatisfaction every day, trying to hide it with slimming garments,” she says.

After hearing about new liposuction technology, Dawn sought out a new plastic surgeon, and visited Dr. Catherine Begovic. Dr. Begovic performs water-assisted liposuction , a new procedure that removes fat evenly and can help Dawn achieve the hourglass figure she seeks.

Dawn and Dr. Begovic join The Doctors to reveal Dawn’s results and explain how the procedure is performed . “I’m very pleased,” Dawn says.

“Do your homework before going into any elective plastic surgery,” plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon says. “Understand that revisions are sometimes necessary.”

Banana Roll Procedure
Victoria, 47, is unhappy with the rolls of fat that lie just below each buttock crease and shaped like a banana.

“I exercise three times a week on the elliptical. I have a great diet, lots of fruits and vegetables, and it still doesn’t go away” she says. “I could lose 10 pounds and still wear the same size jeans or pants. I’m very self-conscious about it.”

Plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn performs the Banana Roll procedure, a localized liposuction that utilizes a small canula to target specific fat deposits. He explains that fat deposits are genetically determined and certain areas, such as saddle bags, muffin tops and banana rolls, are notoriously difficult to eliminate.

“The best way to get rid of [them] is liposuction,” Dr. Youn says.

“I feel great,” Victoria says. “And the recovery was easy!”

Noninvasive Liposuction Dr.  Ordon demonstrates a new body-contouring laser called the Zerona. This device is similar to liposuction, but is noninvasive.

Dr. Ordon explains, “It actually causes the fat cells, from a cold laser, to leak their contents out. You’re actually shrinking fat cells."

Banishing Back Fat
Heather, 40, says she’s embarrassed by the hump on her back, just below her neck.

I have this lump on my back; I call it the fat pad,” Heather says. “I feel like everyone’s looking at it, and it makes me feel insecure and uncomfortable.”

The dorsocervical fat pad, commonly known as a “buffalo hump,” generally occurs when fat stores up in the area just below the neck as a person ages. It can also be attributed to poor posture and obesity, or conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome or osteoporosis. Extended use of certain steroid medications, such as cortisone, have also been known to cause the hump.

Skin surgeon Dr. Sandra Lee performs liposuction to flatten out Heather’s dorsocervical fat pad.

“Liposuction treats problem areas with excess fat,” plastic surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon says. “And this is one of the best areas to be treated.”

“The procedure is very rewarding, and very easy to [perform],” Dr. Lee adds.
