Dr. Ordon's Blog: Preventing Crow's Feet

I am running out of salutation ideas! People always ask me, "What are some home remedies for crow’s feet?"

While I am in the business of fixing this sort of thing, there are certainly some preventative measures you can take. Crow’s feet are created by the flexion of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which is a circular, sphincter-like muscle that surrounds the eye. the muscle protects the eye from brightness and physical contact. For example, we squint to protect our eyes when it's sunny out, or when we’re in high winds.

The best way to avoid developing crow’s feet is to avoid using the orbicularis oculi muscle as best you can:  

  • Wear a hat or visor.
  • Use sunglasses during the day, even on overcast days, as the UV rays can cause you to squint.
  • Keep your skin moisturized.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • Exfoliate the eye area with a buff-puff type cleansing pad or a liquid scrub that has a gritty consistenc
