People might be yelling, “Oh God,” during sex, but can having sex inspire you to become more spiritual?
The Doctors discuss a new study from Duke University, which claims that when men have their oxytocin – the hormone the body releases during sex – levels boosted, they feel an increased spirituality, compared to those who were given a placebo.
“I don’t know if I fully buy all of the results here, but I do know that sex is such an impactful experience… there’s something about sex and the connection and the oxytocin. I could see how it could make a man want to be more connected with the world and life and God,” ER physician Dr. Travis Stork surmises.
OBGYN Dr. Nita Landry explains that women naturally have more oxytocin in their bodies and the only time she gives her patients the hormone is during labor, as it also helps with contractions during child birth. The hormone is released in greater amounts in men when they first hold their newborns.
The study notes that spirituality is a complex element of one’s life and is affected by numerous factors beyond an increased level of the hormone oxytocin.
If next time after sex, you’re feeling a little more in touch with your spiritual side, there just might be some science behind that feeling!
