From the time we’re born our muscles are growing stronger. But in our 40’s we begin to lose muscle mass and function. Getting sick or having a chronic disease can accelerate a person’s muscle loss.
When muscle loss becomes too great, it can make everyday tasks like walking or climbing stairs even more difficult.
What can we do about it?
- If you don’t exercise…Start!
- If you already do...try exercises that increase muscle strength and endurance like resistance and strength training.
- Don’t overdo it! Work with an experienced physical therapist or trainer to develop an exercise plan that’s right for you.
- And don’t skimp on protein! Add high quality protein like meat or soy-based foods throughout the day. You can also try a complete balanced nutrition shake.
If you or someone you know is experiencing muscle loss, see your healthcare physician.
