Chenine says she fights with her 2-year-old son, Adan, for nearly two hours each night to try to get him to go to sleep. She reads him up to six books, but he still kicks and screams and delays by demanding milk and to watch his favorite TV show.
Chenine says she has read several parenting books, but none of the tips have helped. The nightly showdown is costing her valuable sleep and is affecting her relationship with her husband.
The Doctors suggest Chenine put a book called The Rabbit Who Wants To Go To Sleep to the test. The book claims to use psychology and positive reinforcement techniques to promote relaxation and induce sleep.
“People have been comparing it to hypnotizing your child to sleep,” ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says.

Dr. Travis explains that toddlers should get 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day, including naps.
Try these tips to help your active toddler calm down and go to sleep:
- Set an earlier bedtime, so your child is not overtired.
- Begin easing into bedtime an hour before. Turn off the TV and electronic devices. Put away cell phones and noisy toys.
- Set a routine and be consistent.
- If your child regularly asks for food or water before bed, try to manage those needs ahead of time.
- Provide an environment suitable for sleep: Make sure it’s dark and a comfortable temperature. Give your child a comfort object. Try playing soothing music.
