Newly engaged reality stars Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra have come a long way since being featured on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom. Once troublemaking kids lacking ambition and purpose, the childhood sweethearts have matured into responsible young adults driven to succeed.
The couple is now appearing on Teen Mom OG, and they recently co-authored a tell-all book titled Conquering Chaos, which candidly details the challenges they faced living in dysfunctional homes and their early experiences with sex and substance abuse.
“We did drugs, we drank alcohol, we partied, we fought. We were bad kids,” Catelynn says. “After the first time we had sex, that’s all we did. We just had sex, and we weren’t very smart about it.”
When Catelynn and Tyler learned they were expecting a baby, they say it was an alarming wake-up call. “Being so young and not having a high school diploma or a job … that’s what was really scary,” Catelynn says.
Conquering Chaos also delves into the couple’s journey through pregnancy and their difficult decision to go against their parents' wishes by placing their newborn daughter, Carly, up for adoption.
Now six years later, Tyler and Catelynn uphold that they made the right choice, and they maintain an open relationship with Carly and her adoptive parents. “It made us who we are,” Tyler says. “It made us grow up. It made us look at life a lot differently.” Catelynn adds, “Our goal was to become stable enough one day to be parents again."
On January 1, 2015, Catelynn and Tyler welcomed their second daughter, Novalee Reign, with a new perspective on life and on their responsibilities as parents.
In addition to taking care of their little one and planning their wedding, Catelynn and Tyler have been focused on educating adolescents about safe sex and adoption through public speaking events at high schools and colleges across the country. Tyler is currently studying sociology and psychology to pursue his passion for youth counseling.
The couple hopes their book will serve as both a cautionary tale and an inspirational guide to empower teens with knowledge, strength and hope to overcome daunting obstacles in their lives.
