"Is there a doctor on board?"
Yes, it really happens and did last night, Friday, November 14, 2014 on a Delta Air Lines red-eye flight from Los Angeles to New York. OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Ashton was returning to the East Coast from two days of co-hosting duties on the The Doctors. At 4:30 a.m., 38,000 feet over Cincinnati, Ohio, the flight crew solicited help over the PA system to locate a doctor on board. The only M.D. on board was Dr. Ashton, and she responded without delay.
A woman had lost consciousness, was unresponsive, and had very low blood pressure. Dr. Ashton performed a sternal rub and the woman regained consciousness. Speaking only Spanish, Dr. Ashton was able to communicate with the patient, give her oxygen by face mask and directed the flight crew to have an ambulance meet the flight upon landing.
Dr. Ashton wholeheartedly applauds the Delta flight crew, saying they were calm, professional and very helpful. Paramedics met the plane at JFK where the flight was given emergency clearance to land without delay. The patient survived and Dr. Ashton returns to her practice in New York Monday morning.
