Behind the Scenes of The Doctors

Meet the people who have helped bring  The Doctors  into your home for the past six seasons. Plus, see the incredible life changes that have occurred in the lives of The Doctors and the production staff over the years.

Update from Carmen Tarleton
ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says that as the 1000th episode of the show approached, “there was no one I wanted to spend it with more than Carmen Tarleton."

Carmen first appeared on The Doctors in 2011, when she described how she barely survived a brutal attack by her estranged husband, during which he beat her with a baseball bat and doused her with industrial-strength lye. The assault burned more than 80 percent of her body and left her with extensive injuries and severe disfigurements. Despite this horrific event, Carmen remained strong and became an advocate for fellow domestic violence victims.

Moved by Carmen’s incredible story, The Doctors and The Dr. Phil Foundation sent her to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she became the fifth person in the U.S. to undergo a groundbreaking full-face transplant. The elaborate 15-hour surgery, which was conducted by a team of more than 30 surgeons and specialists, involved transplanting a donor’s nose, lips, facial muscles and neck, and carefully attaching the facial arteries and nerves.

Carmen revealed her new face in a one-on-one interview with Dr. Travis in February 2013. At the time, she also revealed that her new chance at life came with an unexpected bonus: a new chance at love. “I actually met somebody, and he’s younger, and he’s ended up being the love of my life,” she said.

Dr. Travis welcomes Carmen back to The Doctors’ stage, where she shares how her life has changed since her first appearance on the show.

“I had a dream that someday, long after my face [transplant surgery], I’d come back, and I’d be on the next chapter in my life. And that dream [has] come true now,” Carmen says.

Dr. Travis, grasping Carmen’s hand, tells her, “It’s been one of the greatest honors of my life getting to know you.”

The Doctors Saved My Life”
During the past six seasons, The Doctors have covered a myriad of health topics and offered valuable life-saving information to people around the world. Hear how the show has helped save the lives of viewers like you!

“We are thankful for the opportunity this show has given us to spread the message of medicine and health worldwide. But, the most important place that we’ve been is in your living room,” Dr. Travis says.

Melody describes how she
discovered a cancerous lump in her breast after performing a self-breast exam, which she’d learned from the show. “I couldn’t be more appreciative of what I
saw that day on  The Doctors because it literally saved my life,” she says.

When Judy’s husband, David, collapsed right in front of her, she immediately recalled a segment from the show in which Dr. Travis shared the perfect tune to follow when performing chest compressions on a patient while awaiting emergency services.

Hear how Wendy discovered a tumor on her brain stem after watching the show. “[This experience] has taught me to pay attention to your body … Be an advocate for your health,” she says.

Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears is pleased to hear from Maris, who says
her son wouldn’t be alive today if she hadn’t learned about the signs of appendicitis from Dr. Sears.

Ray had his first colonoscopy at age 68, after hearing Dr. Travis explain the importance of undergoing the procedure regularly after age 50. Ray says he was shocked by his results and that he wouldn't have lived more than six months if he hadn't gone in for treatment.

Update from Haiti

Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon is brought to tears when The Doctors hear from Gladys Thomas, president of the U.S. Foundation for the Children of Haiti, who shares an update on a young boy whom Dr. Ordon treated after the devastating earthquake in 2010.

Dystonia Awareness
Alex first appeared on The Doctors six years ago, when she described how her life had been impacted by a rare movement disorder called dystonia. Diagnosed in 2007, the disorder caused Alex’s muscles to constantly involuntarily contract, forcing her body into repetitive and often twisting movements.

The Doctors revealed to Alex that she was a perfect candidate for a cutting-edge brain surgery, deep-brain stimulation, which could cure her condition. The Doctors teamed up with The Dr. Phil Foundation to raise money to help Alex with the cost of the procedure, and happily welcomed her back to the show to see her incredible transformation.

Now,  Alex rejoins The Doctors  and meets Monica, a woman who also suffered from dystonia and underwent a similar procedure after seeing Alex’s story on the show.

“It touches my heart so deeply that I could just help one person out, to even get the story out about dystonia. Thank you so much to The Doctors show for doing this because if it wasn’t for you guys, I would have never had the means or the support to go through the surgery myself,” Alex says.
