Surprising Tanning Bed Danger
Brittany, 21, is an aspiring model who started visiting a tanning salon to add an extra glow to her skin before auditions. One day, after a tanning session, Brittany noticed a small pimple on her abdomen. Within two weeks, it became an enormous and painful lump. Her mother insisted she visit the emergency room, where she was diagnosed with MRSA  — a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection — and was rushed into surgery to remove the infected tissue. The bacteria returned nine times after the initial infection, requiring further surgeries and leaving Brittany with disfiguring scars all over her lower body.

“The scariest part was looking down at my legs and seeing the 10 holes … I knew my legs would never be the same again,” she says.

Dr. Travis explains that there are no laws regulating the cleaning of tanning beds, which can make them breeding ground for dangerous bacteria like MRSA.

Dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban explains how the bacteria cultivates and spreads on the skin. She then offers to help Brittany get rid of the scars left by the infection. Brittany says she’ll never visit a tanning salon again.

“As dermatologists, we detest tanning beds,” Dr. Shamban says. “They’re bad for your skin from every single aspect.”
