War of the Worms?
There’s a new weapon in the war on obesity – parasitic worms. A recent University of Georgia study conducted in mice shows that parasitic worms excrete a sugar-based, anti-inflammatory molecule called glycan, which could help treat certain metabolic disorders associated with obesity.
“It makes sense, conceptually,” ER physician Dr. Travis Stork says. “A parasite, by definition, needs the host to survive, so it would make sense that this parasite, a.k.a. worm, is releasing some type of substance to prevent the host from attacking it.”
Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears adds that glycan is also present in human breast milk. “We think maybe that’s one of the reasons why it’s is so protective. Babies plump up, they get a lot of baby fat, but they don’t get a lot of the [inflammatory] problems from it.”
“I want to emphasize this: Don’t start eating worms to get this effect. It probably won’t work,” Dr. Travis states.

Hazards of Going Green
There are all kinds of rules and regulations put in place by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure that the foods we’re buying and eating are safe, but can the grocery bags you’re carrying them in be harming your health? According to studies, reusable grocery bags could spread deadly bacteria like E. coli if you’re not careful.
While reusable grocery bags are the most eco-friendly choice, The Doctors recommend using separate bags for different types of food and washing your bags regularly to prevent a potential bacterial infection.
