TV stars from the '80s — Donna Mills, Michele Lee, Morgan Fairchild and Shari Belafonte — join The Doctors to share their tips for aging gracefully. Learn about the unusual ingredient in a new facial. Plus, researchers might have found the fountain of youth!
“Aging is inevitable, but how you age is largely your choice,” E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork says. “Make the right choices today so you age gracefully tomorrow.”
Fountain of Youth?
Have scientists found the fountain of youth? One study suggests they may have, and the answer might be in our blood .
The study by Stanford University found that when older mice were injected with blood from younger mice, the effects of aging on the brain were reversed. Tests showed that the older mice had improved memory and learning ability.
Researchers hope the finding could eventually be used to help treat Alzheimer’s.
“We know the blood has all these growth factors, stimulating factors to help us repair, regenerate,” plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon says. “There may be something to it.”
Dr. Travis notes that while we tend to notice signs of getting older on the outside, every organ system in our body shows signs of aging and decreased function as well:
• Cardiovascular system: The arteries can become less elastic and fat deposits can increase, so over time your cardiovascular system is forced to work harder, which can lead to high blood pressure.
• Brain:You start losing brain mass in your 30s. The neurons that allow us to think and form memories gradually shrivel and die.
• Skin: Over time, the fat layer under the skin diminishes, collagen is reduced, skin becomes drier, age spots appear, and wrinkles become more noticeable.
The Face of Beauty
Celebrities Simon Cowell, Donatella Versace and Victoria Beckham all reportedly have tried this new treatment to help maintain a youthful glow — the sheep placenta facial.
Dermatologist Dr. Annie Chiu explains how the unusual special ingredient helps the skin.
“It’s chock-full of nutrients from the placenta, things like growth factors, nutrients, amino acids,” she says.
"It’s How You Wear Yourself"
Donna Mills and Michele Lee, stars of the 1980s prime-time soap opera Knots Landing, share their secrets for looking great over the years.
Donna, who is in her 70s, says you have to look good for “where you are in your life.”
She started her career as a dancer and says she still practices ballet moves.
“That’s one of the things that’s kept me going and kept me young is that base of ballet that I had way back then,” Donna says.
“It’s not so much the makeup you wear or wearing certain clothes, it’s how you wear yourself through time,” says Michele, who says she stretches every day and always wears a smile.
“The Face You’ve Earned”
Morgan Fairchild, who is known for her roles in ‘80s TV shows including Flamingo Road and Falcon Crest, joins the conversation about how to age gracefully.
“My mother always said at 20 you have the face God gave you, and at 40 you have the face you’ve earned,” Morgan says. “At my age, you have the face you’ve earned and paid for.”
“When I say paid for, I literally mean sometimes in heartache, sometimes with cream, sometimes with surgery,” she adds.
“Be Happy With Yourself”
Shari Belafonte, who is known for her role on the 1980s television show Hotel and more recently for her appearance on Nip/Tuck, shares her unconventional ways of looking young. But the daughter of singer Harry Belafonte admits that the biggest factor in her youthful appearance might be good genes.
“What you’re a testament to is everyone has their own thing,” Dr. Travis says.
