Life-Saving Impella
Four months into her pregnancy, Iman, 30, says she experienced a sudden onset of fever, chills and nausea, plus a loss of appetite and sensation in her extremities. Doctors initially attributed these symptoms to pregnancy; however, they actually signaled a life-threatening condition.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Iman suffered a seizure, and was rushed to the emergency room to induce labor. While the birth didn’t bear serious complications, Iman’s heart continued to fail and eventually stopped beating.

“The doctors said she was clinically dead and that we had to say goodbye to her,” Megan, Iman’s sister, recalls.

However, the doctor presented one last option for saving Iman’s life: The Impella, the world’s smallest heart pump.

“The Impella is a miniature pump that enters through the aorta and into the left ventricle,” cardiologist Dr. Ray Matthews explains. “Once it’s in the left ventricle, it sucks the blood out of the main pumping chamber and into the aorta through a rapidly rotating propeller. This allows it to provide the blood flow that the human heart couldn’t do on its own.”

The Impella was implanted through open heart surgery and helped Iman's heart circulate blood throughout her body until it regained the strength to work on its own.

“The Impella implant definitely saved my life,” Iman says. “I’m here because of it. I’m totally blessed to be alive.”

But what caused Iman’s heart ailment in the first place?

“Iman had a dental procedure, which can allow the bacteria that naturally resides in the mouth to enter the blood stream,” Dr. Matthews says. “It turns out the heart valves don’t have their own blood supply, allowing the bacteria to attach to the valves and create an infection. This is more common with an existing abnormality with a heart valve, so be sure to let your dentist know if you have one.”

“Something as harmless as a dental procedure can let bacteria in and cause heart failure,” Dr. Travis adds.

Since the Impella implant, Iman and her son, Liam, report to be in good health.

“I’m feeling great,” Iman says. “Everyday gets better for me.”

Sinusitis Toothaches Explained
Did you know that tooth pain can actually be caused by your sinuses? Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Drew Ordon explains how the sinuses can affect the teeth.

“This is called a sinusitis toothache,” Dr. Ordon says.

Symptoms include:
• Pain in rear teeth
• Pain in upper jaw
• Pressure under the eyes
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Runny nose
• Pain from cold or chewing

A sinusitis toothache should be treated differently than a regular toothache. Dr. Ordon suggests nasal decongestants, anti-inflammatory drugs and applying a warm compress several times a day.

“So before you pull that tooth, check out your sinuses,” Dr. Ordon says.
