Bad Breath
Ninety percent of incidents of bad breath are caused by bacteria in mouth. The other 10 percent may be caused by disease.

Fishy smell: May indicate diabetes or problems with the liver.
Ammonia smell: May indicate a problem with the kidneys.
Feces Smell: May indicate a bowel obstruction.
Fruity Smell: May indicate uncontrolled diabetes.

• Use an oral irrigator daily
• Gargle with antimicrobial mouthwash
• Drink lots of water
• See your dentist for regular cleanings, at least every six months

Bugs and Bites

Whether it’s a mosquito, spider or flea bite, don’t scratch it! Scratching and rubbing only causes the foreign substance from the insect or bug to spread and can also cause scarring.

How to Soothe the Discomfort:
• Wash bites with soap and warm water to prevent infection
• Use a cold compress to relieve the swelling and itching
• Spread Calamine lotion and hydrocortisone creams on affected areas

Smelly Feet
Foot odor is caused by bacteria that thrive in warm, moist environments and eat dead skin cells. As the bacteria consume and digest nutrients, they emit a gaseous substance. “Those stinky feet, just like the stinky breath, is really just the farts of the bacteria,” E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork says.

“The bacteria live on the sweat,” plastic surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon adds. “They consume it, they break it down. That’s what creates those bad odors.”

Home Remedies for Stinky Feet:
• Sprinkle baking soda in shoes. The sodium bicarbonate will help neutralize both the acidic and alkaline substances to regulate pH.
• Wear different shoes daily.
• Avoid rubber shoes.
• Wear socks that breathe, such as cotton or moisture-wicking material.
• Avoid nylon socks.
• Soak feet in a tub of black tea for 30 minutes every day for a week. The tannic acid in the tea kills bacteria and closes the sweat pores in the foot. Boil two teabags for 15 minutes, add two quarts of cold water to cool it off, then soak your feet for 30 minutes. Do it once a day for a week, and see if you don't smell a difference!

The Scoop on Poop
Digestion of food can take anywhere from eight to 75 hours from the time it enters the body to the time it leaves the rectum in the form of stool. Dr. Travis explains how digestion works and how stool is formed.

What does your poop say about you? The consistency, texture and color of your stool are helpful barometers of your health, so make sure to take a peek into the bowl. At least one bowel movement a day is healthy and shouldn’t hurt when it passes through the rectum.

Psoriasis Treatment
Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that develops on the skin. Skin cells build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, creating red and scaly patches that are often uncomfortable.

Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra demonstrates how Levia, an at-home phototherapy device, is used to treat psoriasis. Patients will start to see results after several treatments but should expect to undergo 20 to 30 treatments to eliminate the skin condition entirely.

Itchy Gums
One in two Americans has gingivitis, or gum disease, and many are not even aware of it. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontisits, or inflammation and destruction of bone and teeth, which can lead to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and preterm birth.

Gum disease can also cause gums to itch. Dentist Dr. Carly Weiner outlines different causes for the discomfort.
