Montel Williams & Denise Austin’s Fitness Tips

Andrew Hall's story
At only 20 years of age, Andrew Hall has overcome a great deal of adversity in his life. Born prematurely, he had cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects body movement and muscle coordination.

"It was devastating," his mother, Mary, says. "He would have to wear braces [on his legs] and would fall a lot. But it didn't matter to him. He would just get up. He was so determined to walk and live a normal life."

Andrew perservered, and by the time he was a teenager, he was able to walk on his own, had a girlfriend and was living a happy life.

In an instant, everything changed. At 19, Andrew was struck by a drunk driver barreling down the road at 90 miles per hour. Despite being given a 5 percent chance of survival, he miraculously pulled through. But his legs were obliterated. One leg was severed entirely and the other suffered colossal damage.

"That he survived this accident is a miracle in and of itself," E.R. physician Dr. Travis Stork says. "But emotionally, he said he lost his spirit."

"I had cerebral palsy, but I fought through it," Andrew says. "I worked hard and I walked again. To have that taken away is just devastating."

Montel Williams, talk show host and best-selling author of Living Well Emotionally: Break Through to a Life of Happiness, is no stranger to adversity. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (M.S.), Montel's courage and motivation to overcome the autoimmune disease has inspired millions.

"We alone own the definition of who we are," Montel says. "As dark a place as you might be in, you can turn it around. You can talk yourself out of a hole as quickly as you can talk yourself into one."

Montel heard Andrew's story and was determined to help.

"Every hour of every day, I have to make the choice to stay positive," Montel tells Andrew.

First, Montel takes Andrew to the accident site in the hopes Andrew can obtain closure. Then, they visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, where Andrew gets in the water with Winter, a dolphin who lost her tail fin in a crab trap. With the help of a prosthetic fin, Winter is able to swim, a feat that inspires Andrew to do the same.


"If she can learn to swim with a prosthetic fin, then I can learn to swim with a prosthetic leg," Andrew says.

Prosthetist Dr. Ryan Russell and Hanger Orthopedic Group give Andrew an advanced prosthetic limb.

Denise Austin's Daily Dozen Fitness Plan
Like many women in their 30s, 32-year-old Ana has seen her weight balloon. "In just three years I went from a size 10 to a size 16," Ana says. "If I don't do something about it now, I'm never going to have the courage to do anything about it, and I'm afraid I'm just going to gain more weight."
