How Varicose Veins Develop

• Family history: Runs on the mother's side of the family
Hormones: Birth control pills and estrogen replacement therapy increase your chance of varicose veins
Occupation: If you sit at a desk or are on your feet for long periods of time, the risk for varicose veins can rise
Crossing your legs: Changes the position of  your veins' valves
Being overweight: Extra pressure on the venous walls can create varicose veins

• Dr. Ordon reveals the top treatments for varicose and spider veins

Bulging Blood Vessels
Mariana, 27, is a server who spends hours at a time on her feet. As a result, she developed varicose veins six years ago.

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that appear close to the surface of the skin and are most prevalent in the foot and ankle area. Approximately 50 percent of women over the age of 50 will develop them in their legs.

Interventional radiologist Dr. John Hewett performs VenaCure EVLT, a minimally invasive laser treatment, to help Mariana vanquish her varicose veins. The procedure is performed by pulling a laser fiber through the blood vessel and sealing the varicose vein shut. VenaCure does not require anesthesia, usually takes less than an hour and has a short recovery period.

Dr. Hewett demonstrates the VenaCure EVLT procedure, and Mariana shows off her legs just three days after the procedure.

Preventing varicose veins from developing in the first place is simple. "I tell everyone to be active and proactive," Dr. Hewett says. "Active: get up, walk around, lose some weight and exercise. Be proactive: wear compression stockings. Also, if you see a varicose vein, even if it's a small spider vein, go and see a vein specialist. Make sure there's nothing more significant wrong with your legs that can be treated early and taken care of, to prevent more serious consequences from happening later on."

Belly Fat
Amy, 29, gained 30 pounds during her pregnancy, and she hasn't been able to shed the weight in the 11 months since giving birth. She asks The Doctors for a quick and easy way to lose her post-pregnancy belly.

"That's a huge issue for women after pregnancy, losing the baby weight," OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson says. "Basically, exercise and diet are the only real ways to get the fat off."

Better Your Bite

See how Face Lift Dentistry can transform your smile and bite, as well as improve your appearance, without plastic surgery or Botox!

To help slim her figure, Amy tries the Mother Tucker compression tank top, which is designed to smooth and shape the midsection, allowing a new mother to maintain a sleek silhouette while carrying extra pounds.
The tank provides support in three zones: the upper, which supports the breasts; the center, which helps flatten the belly; and the anti-roll bottom, which helps smooth "muffin tops," or extra belly fat.

"This is great for a woman while she's trying to the lose weight, when she's trying to look good in her clothes," Dr. Lisa says. "This is just going to compress, it's not going to make you lose weight. When you take it off, everything's going to come back out."

Amy says that she is happy with the results. "I like that it smoothes the sides, and you can wear it under any kind of outfit, and while you are going to the gym, trying to lose the weight," she says.

Breast Implant Breakthrough
