OB/GYN or Pediatrician?
For new moms, it can be confusing to figure out which doctor to see for certain health questions. Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears and OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson offer their tips.
Momrrhoids
Approximately 10.4 million Americans develop hemorrhoids every year, nearly 60 percent of whom are women.
Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the anus region. They are caused by pressure and straining during bowel movements, obesity, anal intercourse, pregnancy and sitting on the toilet for long periods of time. Hemorrhoids can either develop internally or externally, but external ones often cause the most pain.
When a woman develops hemorrhoids during or after pregnancy, they're known as momrrhoids. They are caused by added weight placed on the uterus during pregnancy, which interferes with the function of pelvic blood vessels and causes blood to pool, forming the hemorrhoids. "They are very, very common," Dr. Lisa says.
