Avoid a Hangover

If you want to avoid a hangover, drink light-colored alcohol. Research suggests that darker liquors such as whiskey and rum cause worse hangovers than lighter liquors such as vodka and gin.

Congeners, toxic by-products of the fermentation process, are found in higher concentrations in darker liquors and contribute to more morning after regret. Be sure to drink responsibly and in moderation.

How Water Affects the Body

Water is the most essential element for life and is vital for every cellular function. The human body is composed of 60 to 70 percent water.

Function of Water:
• Regulates body temperature
• Carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body
• Protects and cushions vital organs
• Aids in the conversion of food into energy
• Aids in the removal of waste
• Cushions joints

• Blood is approximately 90 percent water
• Muscles are approximately 75 percent water
• Bones are approximately 20 percent water
• Lungs are approximately 90 percent water
• The brain is approximately 70 percent water

Dehydration Dangers
Morgan, 26, is a self-confessed diet-soda-holic. "I only drink soda. I never drink water," she says. "I will go to great lengths to avoid water!"

Although Morgan eats healthily, doesn't smoke, and is a professional dancer, E. R. physician Dr. Travis Stork cautions that she can become dehydrated from only drinking soda.

People who drink less than two glasses of water a day are considered chronically dehydrated and their risk for heart attack doubles. Their heart can enlarge to two times the normal size and beat twice as fast as a healthy, hydrated heart.

"When you don't have enough water, your blood becomes very thick," Dr. Travis explains. The thicker, or more viscous the blood, the harder it is for it to circulate normally, taxing the entire circulatory system.

To make water more appealing, try sweetening it naturally! Fill your glass of H2O with mint leaves, or slices of oranges, lemons, limes, cucumber, peppermint or ginger.

Water Pill Warning

When dieting and exercising, water is important to flush metabolic waste out of the body. However, water pills are not the answer to shedding pounds faster.

Water pills are diuretics, a class of drugs that cause the body to rid itself of sodium and water. Though helpful for the treatment of conditions such as high blood pressure and glaucoma, water pills should not be used as a weight loss method. Along with ridding the body of water, the pills also cause the body to lose essential electrolytes and potassium.

"You will lose weight, but you're losing water weight, so you're dehydrating yourself," plastic surgeon Dr. Drew Ordon explains.

Water Aerobics

Dr. Jim takes the plunge at the YMCA and tries water aerobics for the first time!

Instead, try:
• Drinking a glass of water before every meal to make your stomach feel fuller.
• Drinking two glasses of cold water to burn 50 calories.

Fluoride in Water
Fluoride protects tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. The mineral is often added to water to strengthen teeth, however, too much fluoride can be harmful. "We've found there's a perfect amount of fluoride that should be in the water to keep it safe," Dr. Travis says. "Given the amount that appears in our water system, it is safe, in my opinion."

As far as fighting cavities and bacteria in the mouth, Dr. Travis says, "Fluoride is probably our best defense."

Pediatrician Dr. Jim Sears advises parents to use fluoride-free toothpaste for their children until they are 2 years old. "The reason is, if you use adult toothpaste, and even though it says not to swallow [it], they will swallow," he says.

If you feed your infant baby formula, be sure to use fluoride-free water for babies age 6 months and younger. Using water that is distilled, de-mineralized or run through a reverse-osmosis filtering system is best.

After the age of 6 months, consult your pediatrician to find out how much fluoride is present in the local tap water and whether the water is safe to give your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends boiling tap water to sterilize it for several months after introducing it into a baby's diet.

Contraception in Water

OB/GYN Dr. Lisa Masterson cautions that when having sexual intercourse in any sort of water — be it a Jacuzzi, waterfall, pool, etc. — people must still protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.

"Male condoms are less effective in water," she says. "Oils and suntan lotions can also break down the condom, so you have to be really careful."

Polyurethane condoms are stronger than latex condoms, and their chemical composition will not break down as easily. If you use lubrication, be sure to use one that is silicone-based, and apply it before getting into the water.

Water Waste
