Is it possible to turn back our biological clocks? The Doctors gives you a sneak peek into your future and shows you how to wind back the hands of time.
Some doctors believe that calorie restriction diets are the key to longevity. Adults should consume approximately 1,200 calories per day, but those who partake in these diets are consuming closer to 800 calories per day. One theory as to why this method may work is because consuming fewer calories induces the body to enter a mini-hibernation state and slows metabolism. “Your body is working less,” Dr. Ordon notes, “but if you’re not bringing in enough protein, you’re going to start withering away.” Dr. Lisa adds, “You know, there’s no quick fix for anything, no fountain of youth. You’ve just got to live healthy, eat right and enjoy your life!”
Women are predisposed to bone density deficiencies because estrogen plays such a critical role in bone, brain and skin health. Bone loss begins after age 30, but when a woman goes through menopause, estrogen decreases dramatically and bones weaken. As women age, 15 percent of them will fracture their hip, and of those 15 percent, close to 20 percent will die within a year of the fracture.
Thyroid disease and vitamin deficiency can contribute to bone loss, so it is important to undergo regular bone scans. There’s an arsenal of medications that can be used to combat bone loss, but they need to be started as soon as a problem is detected. Soda, smoking and drinking all increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone loss, but weight-bearing exercises and calcium supplements can help to keep bones healthy and strong.
Cracking the Aging Code
Dr. Eric Braverman, a pioneer in anti-aging medicine and author of the books The Edge Effect and Younger You, says he’s cracked the aging code. He theorizes that organs that age faster than a person’s actual age put that person at risk and most diseases progress 80 percent before anyone even notices them. “Most people are surprised by their illnesses and I’m here to make sure there are no surprises.” Dr. Braverman says, “Everybody has five to 10 hidden illnesses by the time they’re 40 years old and they don’t know them.”
The Doctors sent Dawn, 44, to Dr. Braverman’s office for his “21st Century Physical,” where she underwent a battery of sophisticated tests that included bone scans, ultrasounds, metabolic tests and brain mappings. The cutting-edge technology evaluated the age of Dawn’s organs to determine whether they are aging faster than she is.
Dawn learns that her thyroid has cysts and nodules, and its age print is 60 years old. Dawn is not alone; 60 million Americans go undiagnosed with thyroid disease. If you have symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, depression and fuzzy thinking, ask your doctor to check your thyroid.
Dr. Braverman tells Dawn that she has a fatty liver, with an age print of 70 years. A fatty liver contains more than 10 percent of fat and is often enlarged. He explains that the liver’s job is to filter the toxins from the bloodstream and demonstrates how fat impedes this vital function. Fatty liver is often asymptomatic, but can be caused by unhealthy eating and subsequent insulin resistance.
Dr. Braverman performs an ultrasound on Dawn’s heart onstage and discovers that not only does she have an age print of 60, she also has mitral valve regurgitation (MVP), which is when the mitral valve in her heart does not close properly. If left untreated it can lead to fainting, arrhythmia, stroke and heart attack.
High blood pressure and heart disease are often precursors to this condition and it’s very common in women. Symptoms of MVP vary and can range from arrhythmia, which is an irregular or racing heartbeat, lightheadedness, dizziness and shortness of breath.
Dr. Braverman explains, “The brain is our most important organ. If we get the brain and mind straight, then you’ll get your health straight.” He scanned and measured the activity of Dawn’s brain print, which measured tension, memory, energy, metabolism and sleep patterns.
All Symptoms Are Reversible!
Dr. Braverman concludes that 44-year-old Dawn is only as young as her oldest part. “We die from our oldest part,” he explains. He assures Dawn that she can easily reverse the numbers he gave her. “Do you want to change your life?” he asks. He suggests an action plan:
1. Go on a weight loss plan.
2. Take iodide for her thyroid.
3. Take lipoic acid for her liver.
4. Drink copious amounts of teas – they’re filled with nutrients!
5. Add spices like cumin, garlic, tarragon, cinnamon and cayenne pepper to meals, as they are chock full of nutrients as well.
6. Eat lots of vegetables! Not only are they filled with nutrients, but they increase the amount of times you chew your food, thus decreasing appetite.

Hormone Therapy Goes on the Couch
Bioidenticals, a type of hormone replacement therapy, is examined when Susie from Houston, Texas, joins via web cam to ask, “I’m in my late forties and I’ve been taking bioidenticals and I feel absolutely fantastic!” she crows, “But are there any dangerous side effects that I should be aware of?”
Dr. Lisa explains that bioidenticals mimic the estrogen and progesterone that the body produces, and are manufactured to have the same molecular structure as those in the body. They are considered “natural,” and thus different from conventional hormone therapy, which are synthetic. Dr. Lisa thinks that hormone replacement therapy has a lot of benefits, but should always be taken under the supervision of a doctor, especially if she is at risk for breast cancer or heart disease.
Dr. Lisa adds that if a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer while she’s on hormone replacement therapy, she has a much lower mortality rate than someone who is not. However, if a woman is estrogen-receptor positive, then the risks of cancer are greater.
Age Reversal Hydrafacial System
It takes 15 minutes and makes you look 15 years younger! Dr. Ordon performs the latest facial rejuvenation procedure called the Hydrafacial on Sally, 43. He explains that it’s a step up from microdermabrasion and the reason it’s so effective is because of its special spiral tip. The tip exfoliates, vacuums dirt and infuses serum, antioxidants and moisturizers into the skin -- all at the same time!
The light emission diode that often accompanies the treatment was originally developed by NASA, stimulates collagen growth and makes the skin appear more youthful. The Hydrafacial procedure takes about 15 minutes is often combined with the light diode therapy and is ideal for people with brown spots, rosacea and acne. Each treatment costs approximately $150 and should be done once a month for five to six months to see the desired results.
The Secret to Eternal Youth
Perhaps the secret to youth isn’t so secret after all. The same principles seem to be tried and true: eat healthily, exercise, laugh, minimize the stress in your day and spend quality time with those you love.
