Ok well this is a bit early but I wanted to write this well before I leave so I get all the words of wisdom I can possibly get. I have to go to Seattle for a hockey tournament for my 11 year old on Friday (if all goes well and we get to the final we'll be leaving late Sunday - Go Canadian Hockey!!! LOL). That is three whole days of eating out. Yikes. I am sooooo worried. I have been so fine here at home. My girlfriends have been amazed that I have stuck to the diet even considering I am still cooking for two sons, one of whom is 17 years old, 6'7" and 250 pounds, making my own meals - almost separate from theirs but not that much ... but still ... I stuck to it.
So now I have this hockey trip. A whole hockey team of 11 year olds and their parents and extended families at a hotel in Seattle for a weekend.
Anyway, I know what this trip means culinary wise - lots of fast food, pizza, and doughnuts. My husband is the coach and he always likes the team to eat together, the parents too, as a team building thing. He knows how hard I have worked and I know he will try to direct the team to restaurants that have some options for me, but I know I will be faced with my personal demon, fast food, at some point or another.
So, my question is, especially for all my American friends, what is the best "fast food" or family style place that is suitable for a rowdy hockey team and that will give me the best option close to our program? We will be in the Lynwood suburb of Seattle, playing in two arenas there, so if anyone knows places near there that would be good for me, please let me know!!!
Oh, by the way, I am looking forward to doing my part as a good neighbor and helping the American economy as much as I can! LOL! All of the Mom's on our team are planning a huge shopping trip. We love cross border shopping, but I am stuck as I do not want to buy clothes yet - I have a long way to go and I'd rather do a huge shop when I get to my goal. So hello lovely shoes, purses, accessories and household items I suppose. So another thing I want to know from my American friends is are the white sales over there already (sheets and towels?)? If so, where are the best shoe sales and in and what stores?
Thanks everyone, I really look forward to hearing your advice.
Cheers,
Lisa (aka writerchick1)

I envy you!! All of our boys played hockey and my husband coached or assisted, I wore out a new surburban taking them to all their games! Some of our best memories are tournaments. Mind you the Tim Horton Mochas helped my weight get to where it is! I know you will be fine, you think when you eat now! You have been working the program, you are strong! Plus you have the support of your family. Bring a green tea bag and enjoy the game!!! P.S.-3 of my sons play together on a mens league team now, still playing!
I am not from Seattle, but as a southerner I can tell you that since you are on what the US calls "the Healthy Coast" you will be able to find lots of restaurant options and even fast food options while there! Many of the fast food restaurants now have grilled chicken salads (even here in the greasy south), so you will always have that option. I wouldn't be to afraid, Seattle, along with all of Oregon and most of California are very health concious people and you will have options. Don't fret about it, that will just cause stress and I know when I stress I reach for bad food. You will do fine, I would suggest maybe google the area you are going to be visiting and try to see what restaurants are around you before you go. That way you can inform your husband before you get there, pre-planning is always best! Most restaurants have online menus now, so you should be able to find a variety of restaurants with some things that taste good and are good for you. Good luck to you (and your son in his hockey)! You can do this!
Hi writerchick, I'm down in the states every weekend and love to shop. I actually go on line and check there weekly ads for each store on Thur so when I'm there it saves times especially if you are looking for something in particular. if you are close to Seattle there is alot of outlet malls, depending on what you want to spend but quite honestly bedding and house stuff if on sale is really good at Macy's. I'm a sale shopper I look for racks that are 70 -80 % off. They no how to have sales and really i'm not sure if bedding really goes out of style, bedspreads and comforters are quite cheap at Ross dress for less so are shoes and purses.
When I was on the Atkins diet we ate out alot and I'm also a Food & Beverage manager so you had to get creative, ceasar salad no croutons, order a hamburger with no bun and a salad again no croutons. Breakfast was easy bacon an eggs no toast no hashbrowns and for diiner I would order a steak again with ceasar salad or toss salad. This will keep your body from carbs and you feel like you get to participate. Hope this helps.
Hi Writerchick1
I live in the Seattle area - actually in Everett which is just north. For family friendly places I might suggest:
Alfy's pizza (which are all over the area) which has an all you can eat salad bar for you and "fairly good" pizza for the men in the group. There are a lot of "great" pizza places, but I can't guarantee the salad bar.
Red Robin has some mighty hefty burgers and all you can eat fries for the guys, but there are quite a few different salads on the menu as well.
Applebees is a famly restaurant and has a 550 calorie menu (5 or 6 items) to choose from. Now that you are on Cycle 3, there is a shrimp, vegetable, pasta (light on the pasta) dish that I thought was pretty good.
I know that there are a LOT of healthy restaurant alternatives, but I am not sure about a family atmosphere.
As for shoes - Nordstrom Rack. Name brands at marked down prices. You can find good deals there, you just have to look.
Hey Writerchick1, Great job sticking to the "eating plan" (don't like the D word) Anyways, lots of great advice already given.. Just wanted to add to it. A lot of the fast food restaurants do have salads and healthy options. Be careful with the large prepared salads from places like Red Robin, some of them have more calories and fat than a hamburger with the bun. When your husband is treating the team with donuts maybe he could pick up some yogurt or fruit for his beautiful wife :). Enjoy your weekend and hope your team does well.
