The Elastic Waistband Conspiracy

So I've been thinking (read dreaming) a lot about the clothes I envision myself wearing at the end of this 17 Day Diet journey.  I see myself in sexy Diana Von Furstenberg type wrap dresses ("type" because I can't afford the real deal, I'm hoping Target has a similar style LOL) or tight white jeans with a tank top.  Fearlessly slipping into form fitting clothing, low slung jeans, bathing suits and - dare I say it - a bikini.  These daydreams made me think of the clothes I currently wear; oversize tops and yoga pants.  Now it's probably pretty obvious that I don't actually do any yoga , so why do I have seven pairs?  Simple, it's the elastic waistband, conveniently covered by the oversize top which does double duty by covering the belly bulge and back fat.  Plus, from a distance, the black ones can sort of pass for dress pants, or so I tell myself.

At the risk of using inflammatory rhetoric, elastic waistbands are the root of all weight evils.  I'm wondering when these comfy creations started sneaking into every department store - and even grocery stores!  Is it coincidence that Wal Mart carries a wide range of such clothing, usually located right beside the in-store McDonalds outlet? Maybe that's a tad "Michael Moore'ish" of me to consider the possibility of a conspiracy between the fast food and casual clothing industries, but it's always comforting to have a villain in every story.  It gives us someone to blame besides ourselves.

All kidding aside, we all do it, we wear these comfortable options because that way we can ignore our ever expanding waistline.  I remember when I was younger and thinner, I would not be caught dead wearing something like that out of the house.  I had at least 15 pairs of jeans that varied only by one size and if I had to go up to the larger size, I was on top of that issue right away, watched what I ate and hit the gym until I was back in the smaller jeans.

So with that in mind, when I reach my goal, I hereby pledge to rid my closet of all elastic waist clothing, baggy tops and all of my "fat" clothes.  My new size will require a new wardrobe and that will consist of ONLY clothes that actually fit and fasten with real zippers and buttons.  I may still own a couple of pairs of yoga pants, but I will only wear them for actually doing yoga.

Who's with me?

I LOVE how you write, I enjoyed reading your post immensely, it's good to have a sense of humor. I agree with the elastic waist thing. I only wear them when I'm large. When I was thinner I stood up straight and even held my stomach in when I walked. I used to be a beauty queen. I would never dream of wearing elastic back then unless I was at the Gym. I have an entire wardrobe of thinner clothes waiting for me in my closet with zippers and buttons. day 7 and I have lost 8 lbs. Looking forward to another active week! take care and thanks again for helping me remember the joy of wearing regular waistbands!

I'm with you!!  And did you know that you can still see those nasty dimples thru the yoga pants...that's what the long comfortable oversized shirt is for.  To hang over your behind.  Is it right to wear a body shaper under the yoga pants so you look good in them? LOL.  I'm starting today...every time I think this stinks I'll just imaging walking behind myself...yikes.  Hope I see you on a tropical vacation in our bikini's.

I made it through the weekend... sigh of relief

Weekends are always hard for me because the unhealthy food comes out. I did have 5 hard candies and a couple tortilla chips but I counted them all and stayed within my calories for the day.

Now that it's monday again, it's time to put on my tennis shoes and get back on the treadmill.

Here is wishing you a wonderful active week. Stay strong!

A tropical vacation sounds nice :) I'm not sure I'll ever wear a bikini but I'd love to wear a one piece and actually look good in it again.

Oh, writerchick1, I soooo understand what you are saying and so agree. But, wow! To pledge to give up my comfies???? Not sure I can do that!! hahaha! Actually, you really have a great point and are really right. So, I, too, join you in ridding my closet of the clothes that encourage not paying such quite close attention to weight gain and wearing only the clothes with zippers & buttons!!! By the way, thank you for the great push!!!
