Am I pregnant?

I recently missed a period and immediately made an appointment with my general doctor for a pregnancy test. My HCG level came back at a 5 which my doctor said was "negligible" and to expect a heavier then normal period. He said that he thought it was a "chemical conception". All this he left on my voicemail which was traumatic to say the least. After doing a lot of internet research I have found that three weeks after conception it is normal to have HCG levels as low at a 5 and still have a healthy baby. A week later I still have not had a period and I have a lot of typical pregnancy symptoms. My OBGYN can't see me for another three weeks and I wish I had answers now, could I be pregnant and if I am will I miscarry?

Hello VH:

First of all, shame on your doctor for leaving this message on your voicemail instead of just asking you to call his office for the test results!  It was not only unacceptable, but also (potentially) an invasion of your privacy!  I have never heard of a "chemical conception" either.  You may very well be pregnant, so while you are waiting to see your OB-GYN, do NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, SMOKE OR TAKE ANY DRUGS! Also, start taking folic acid supplements.   I knew I was pregnant with my second child (and this may sound weird) because the smell of my urine was different than normal & it was the same smell when I had my first son.  As far as miscarrying is concerned, I wouldn't worry about that now.  Just start taking care of yourself & follow up on your OB-GYN appointment.  Good luck!

Hey there! You know, you really don't have to wait to get into the OB-GYN...if you are that worried, dig into the yellow pages and look up planned parenthood or other pregnancy related, income based centers. You could get in with them ASAP and see what is going on. Their waiting lists are generally never 3 or 4 weeks long. Let us know how it works out!
