I am an alcoholic, recovered for 4 years.  I can tell you that there is a solution to Alcoholism and it was not shown on todays show!  Someone who is not an Alcoholic cannot help someone who is.  The gentleman on the show today was not even willing to admit he was an Alcoholic.  He's not ready and none of the methods used today will help him or his wife.  The wife should go to Al-Anon or CODA.  She needs to understand what she is up against.  She also needs to know there is nothing she can do to change the situation other than take control of herself and her needs.  Alcoholics don't get married...  they take hostages!  

I drank to blackout everyday for years and still was not able to concede to my innermost self that I was an Alcoholic.  I drove drunk on numerous occasions.  It isn't a matter of making bad choices or good choices.  It's what Alcoholics DO.  There is no logic to it.  There is certainly no awareness of others.  Alcoholics are self-centered and cannot empathize with others.  

The example set with this show is a bad one.  Alcoholism is a disease coupled with a mental obsession.  It is absolutely NOT about self will or morality.  Please take time to talk with recovered Alcoholics and/or read the book Alcoholics Anonymous.  It would be very helpful to the public to really understand the nature of this disease and what they can realistically do about it.
