Hey guys!!
So today was the day I had been waiting for!! The day I got the results of my bone biopsy. DRUM ROLL PLEASE...... AND they finally found something!!! I never thought I would say this but THANK GOD!!
So here is the gist of what they told me....
In our bodies we have two types of cells Osteoclasts and Osteoblasts.
Osteoblasts build bone and Osteoclasts break bone down.
The thing is bone is constantly remodeling itself. When a part of a bone becomes "old" or "unusable" the Osteoclasts break it down and then the Osteoblasts fill in the part that was broken down with new bone. Also when the bodies level of Calcium is low the Osteoclasts will break down bone to release Calcium.
Well here's the thing..... I don't have any Osteoclasts.... therefore my body can't remodel bone and it can't break down bone for calcium if it needs it. They have started me on a higher dose Calcium supplement to make sure that my body is continually getting the Calcium it needs. They are also starting me on another medication.
The medication they are starting me on is called Forteo. Forteo is tradtionally an osteoperosis medication, but can be used for many things. what it really is a synthetic Parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone is one of the hormones in the body that helps the body to grow. The hope is by giving this to my body that it will increase the overall density of my bones or as my dr. put it.. make them grow every where... inside outside and everywhere inbetween. I will be on this med for two years which is the maximum time you are allowed to be on it during your life time. The med is administered once a day through a daily injection. I will be trained in how to give these injections to myself. I will start this med in hopefully about one to two weeks. It has to be approved by my insurance company first but if it isn't my dr. is going to go to the drug company and see what he can work out with them as he is one of the top docs they work with.
All in all this sounds like a good path for me. The down side however is that in early studies on rats ( yes very sadly it was animal tested :( ) some rats developed Osteosarcoma. The drug has been on the market since 2003 and since then no one has developed Osteosarcoma but everyone has to be routinely screened.
I welcome questions and comments.
Brianna

I am sorry to hear about your bone problems, but I am glad to hear that you have found some answers. I wish you well and I hope everything works well for you.
Brianna, Merry Christmas! I guess you have to take the chance of getting bone cancer as a compromise for getting bone. Seems a little harsh, but at least you have an answer and are able to start doing something to make you stronger. My next door neighbor had those daily injections. After all you have been through, I would think that would be easy for you. And it will go a long way towards helping you in your hospital career. Soon you will be able to do phlebotomy!! I know, I am so funny. I hope you are feeling stronger soon. Enjoy your holidays, and good luck. Bobbie
Bobbie,
