OK So during the last year I was tested for a million different things. During the course of those things, they found out that I was Vitamin D deficent. I guess normal Vitamin D was is a level over +30. Mine in the first test was 21. I was prescribed a series of pills. One 100 IU Vitamin D pill each day. I was told to take these pills for 6 months and then have the test repeated. This all happened in June. In about October, I had some more tests done to check for immunology diseases and as part of the tests they reran some of my old labs to see if anything had changed including my Vitamin D lab. As it turns out, despite being on pills every day to increase my Vitamin D level, it had actually dropped significantly. I now had a Vitamin D level of 12 and was Moderately Vitamin D deficent. My doctor changed my medication to two pills a week. I now take two 50,000 IU pills twice a week. She also told me to have the labs tested in 3 months. I did and my lab went up to 23. Then I had it checked again three days ago and I just got the labs back and they are down to 6. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing this fluctuation in levels and what else I can do to up my levels. I spend time outside and in the sun when I can, but I do live in Minnesota so the levels of Vitamin D I can get from the sun are lower in these winter months or so I have been told. I also try to eat dairy produts, but I am lactose intolerant so I have problems getting through this source. Does anyone have any ideas? This is not a good problem for me to have as the connective tissue disorder that I have affects the bones and makes them brittle infact it is called the brittle bone disease. So with the Vitamin D being low and inhibiting the intake of calcium into my bones, they are more brittle. Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks
Brianna

Hello
I wonder if your situation has anything to do with your cholesterol? Has that been tested? do you eat fish or Egg yokes? I found this for you:
http://www.cholesterol-and-health.com/Vitamin-D.html
I only drink milk a few times a year, b/c I have endometriosis, so I take 2000 IU of Vitamin D a day and eat a lot of fish and eggs. I eat those items for other health reasons as well but they aren't related to Vitamin D intake.
Anyways I dont' know if that helps you at all, but if you could let me know either way, that would be greatly appreciated. Take Care of yourself

Hey Lozza,
Thanks for your comment! My cholestrol is good. It is actually closely monitored because I have a heart condition. I do eat a lot eggs and egg yokes, but not much fish which is kind of ironic being that I live in the land of 10.000 lakes. My doctors can't explain it either. They are just hoping that possibly increasing my vitamin D intake in the form of pills will help.
Thanks for the information!

Well I hope the pill form helps, it helps me :) I eat a lot of FIsh for Vitamin D, salmon oil and healthy fats to slow down my metabolism. Do you now like fish? or does it make your heart condition worse?
I'm a bit of a curious George so if I ask too many questions or if you don't feel comfortable just say so :)
Take Care
Lozza
FYI the soy milk they are making these days is very high in Vitamin D, but if you have enodometriosis don't drink a lot of it. ITs very high in Estrogens!
Lozza,
I welcome all your comments and thank you for them! I don't like fish and I don't eat them all that much because I have recently been told they may be bad for my heart condition. I was born with a Congential Heart Defect which has had some lasting effects, and I have some other heart issues due to my Connective Tissue Disorder. ( I have blogs on both these issues if your interested!) I have been trying to drink soy milk as much as possible and get as much vitamin D as possible in odd ways such as vitamin d enriched cheese or yogurt even if it means paying more money. I am also a college student so I admit my diet is kind of varied. Thanks for all your questions!

so I recently broke my arm causing me to have to report to the doctor keeping tabs on my vitamin D. She said that the test that came out as 6 was false and when they reran it, it came out at 15. Still quite a significant drop. Because of the broken bone I will be getting my Vitamin D tested any day now again and have to have a bone density test this summer. I guess something isn't working right because they tell me with the level i am on I should be well over 30 in vitamin D. I will let you all know how it turns out.
Hi, I am not a doctor, but this is what I found after learning I was vit D deficient: 1) ask for other tests: a. blood calcium test, b. PTH test (parathyroid hormone), c. tests for kidney and liver, 2) if your calcium is high, get tested for: a. parathyroid, b. lymphoma, c. sarcoidosis, d. ask about tests for other conditions that can cause high blood calcium. 3) if blood calcium is normal, get a 24-hr urine test for calcium in the urine and kidney function. My doctor would not run some of these tests as she is so sure that 50,000 IU's once a week for six months would cure me. My D levels are normal now after 2 mo's, but my symptoms are now worse and I am paying out of pocket to get the additional tests. 4) It's possible that your lab isn't doing a good job of testing vit D -- home test kits from a reputable lab are available for $65 at www.vitdamindcouncil.org to compare to your current results. 5) Inform yourself: if you haven't already, send a question to the doctors on this website. Go to www.parathyroid.com and read through the entire website to learn about parathyroid and vit D. Go to www.endocrineweb.com also. Do a Google search on Dr. Michael F Holick and vitamin D deficiency. Go to www.worldcat.org to find books all over the country that you might be able order through your local library via interlibrary loan if your local library doesn't carry the book.
First of all, I am sorry to hear that you had so much trouble getting your vitamin-D level stabilized. Most people do not have that much dificulty-unless they are overweight.(I am not saying you're overweight!) However there has been recent studies that show people who are carrying extra weight tend to have unstable, low Blood level of vitamin-D. This is because Vitamin-D is stored in fat, and if there is extra fat in the body, the body overrides the system and begins storing all of the vitamin-D in the fat and not leaving any in the blood. This was on Dr.Oz the other day. Anyway, I do understand that some people will have more difficulty getting their Vitamin-D levels in a normal range.
There are a few different disorders that can change the way your body uses Vitamin-D and can even cause your body to stop abosorbing it from you food/supplements that you take. Have you been tested for any of these types of disorders? I don't know the names of them, they are not very common-but if you must take that high of a dose regularly to maintain a health vitamin-D level, there is a chance that your body is having difficulty absorbing it from your food/supplements. Do you take any medications for heartburn, GERD or acid reflux? These types of medications lower the level of acid in the stomach and can cause you to become nutrient deficient. I used to take Prevacid and I was really having issues abosorbing nutrients, that is why I am on B vitamin injections- when I took just an oral supplement my body didn't absorb any of it. Anyway, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your story with me!
