I'm 16 years old and in high school. Everyone in my school is talking about women eating their placenta after giving birth. I know that animals eat their placenta, but I'm not sure about women. What do you think? Can you help me answer my question? Thanks!

they did a show on this, personally i think its gross after delivering (now I have to think ) 12 babies in the field ( working on ambulance) the thought disgusts me sorry only my opinion.
I have heard of it. For many years and in different countries, women use their placentas for ritualistic value or superstitious beliefs. Long ago, women would save the placenta from their first born, and dry it out to something similar as beef jerky. During the second pregnancy, women would eat the saved placenta close to the end of pregnancy. The thought was by eating the hormone enriched meat, it would stimulate labor. Women would also share their saved placenta with other pregnant Moms. The modern women who eat their placenta, do so because it helps to ward off the baby blues. After a woman gives birth, her body is suddenly depleted of all the hormones that the placenta once supplied. This could be the cause of depression that sometimes follows giving birth. Some women preserve it by drying it out and eating bits and pieces here and there. Some women dry it out and chop it into a fine texture and put the placenta into empty pill shell capsules and just swallow the pills. There's never been any "actual" studies to support this theory. Only the opinions of the women who have done it. The women who have done this say it made them feel great. I personally, am just gonna take their word for it!
so it can be something a woman can do? interesting, and it's safe?
It's safe as long as it's cooked properly. Just like with any food. It is organ meat, and organ meat can become more easily contaminated with bacteria, than muscular meat. Like I said, the women eat the placenta to help restore their hormone levels. Then again, the heating process of cooking it, probably destroys the hormones, or some of them anyway. There's never been a study to see if the cooking process destroys the hormones in the organ. It's speculation at this point.
