Prednisone and Blood Sugar

So today I had a little issue with my blood sugar, hopefully it won't happen again. My doc put me on prednisone because of airway inflammation as well as gave me a shot of a corticosteriod before I left the office. Tonight I really didn't feel right, really shaky and anxious. My mom has diabetes so she has a test kit and out of curiousity (knowing Prednisone can affect a diabetics blood sugar) I tested mine and it was 215...I had recently had food which I know can cause elevated blood sugar but typically only up to 140. Anywho, it took roughly two hours for it to return to close to normal..I kept tabs on it. It went from 215 to 188 in 40 minutes to 187 fourty-five minutes after that. 159 after another 45 minutes and 112 after another hour.

Anyway, has anyone ever experienced this or have suggestions for me. I'm not diabetic, have never had elevated blood sugars or had any kind of problems with it. Like I said I knew it affected people that had diabetis but never people that didn't have it.

It kinda freaked me out a little, since we just learned about diabetic ketoacidosis in my nursing class.

Let me know what you think though, I'd really appreciate it.

I am so glad to come across this problem.   My husband was on a course of Prednisone for over 30 days and during this time he really experienced some significant bouts of blood sugar dropping.   He would break out in a sweat, become very weak, nauseated, etc.    whether following a meal, or not eating.  I did not realize that Prednisone affected your blood sugar levels.

Yeah, it does. Especially prolonged use of like in your husbands case. Thankfully I'll only be taking it for 8 days, but last night was not fun...I didn't feel good at all. Usually it raises blood sugar but I guess it can also lower it too if your body secretes too much insulin to counteract it. Hopefully he is feeling better though.
