Organic Acid Disorders

My son was diagnosed with an organic acid disorder called Isovaleric Acidemia. It's a very rare condition that has to be inherited by both parents in which his body cannot break down a protein called Leucine which causes it to build up to dangerous levels. Most common treatment is medication, Levocarnitine, and a low protein diet. This condition can only be treated and doesn't go away. My son's form is mild but that isnt't always the case. If untreated the child can become very sick which can result in brain damage, seizures and sometimes death. There are many forms of Organic Acid Disorders and are mostly detected in newborn screenings. Even though they are rare , there are still out there and need to be addressed. I had no clue I carried that trait and neither did his dad. I'm so greatful for newborns screenings and with the care and participation of his specialists and myself, my son is as happy and healthy as he can be.
