fingernail biting/picking in adults

Would like to see above topic discussed. I am 67 and trying to conquer the problem all my life. I am a vegetarian now, a good weight, exercise but have not been successful in growing my fingernails out to the ends of my fingertips. They look like stubs and the nails are very flimsy. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
