Diabulimia

created on: 10/26/08Abbie is my youngest daughter.  She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 15.  She was admitted to ICU more than 20 times over the next 3 years due to ketoacidosis (DKA). As the doctors, nurses, counselors and psychiatrist drilled us about her misuse of insulin, not one of them eluded to the fact that Ab could be suffering from Diabulimia and not simply being rebellious as a reaction to having been diagnosed with diabetes. And, isn't that absurd? In fact, isn't it criminal, that the doctor, the specialist, Ab's endocrinologist who taught her how to misuse her insulin to lose weight, never mentioned to any of us that he knew exactly what was going on?
Now that I know what it is my daughter has been suffering with for over 8 years, I am beginning a grassroots effort to change the protocol of educational materials disseminated to newly diagnosed type 1 diabetics.  I am searching for people who are willing to help us advocate for this change.  Please go to, www.abbeducated.info, and read Abbie's story.  Post a comment where you feeled moved to do so.  Then, help us make a difference in the lives of those suffering from diabulimia and in the lives of those who haven't started down that path.  Diabulimia can be avoided if people know that is exist and how to stop it.  We want everyone to know!!!

I am so sorry that you had bad info given to you. I was very lucky that a Pediatrician had moved into our area when ty was diagnosed. He had a special interest in diabetes. Ty is now 15 years old and never has been readmited in the hospital since his diagnosis. He is on the insulin pump and well aware what he could do if he wanted to loose weight. I have heard of Diabulimia and I wish you luck. I think what saved us is Ty doesn't know anything other then how to live with diabetes he doesn't remember not having it. I have a nephew who got it in his late teens and he refuses to take his insulin some time he doesn't take it all day. I have no idea how he is alive. His A1C has been 15 for years. My son we aim for under 7. Good luck and I will go to that webside and read Abbie's story
