I would really like to see a segment on the show about the dangers and benefits of prescribing depression medications for children. Does the risk of addiction outweigh the benefits? Too often parents are not told side effects and addiction possibilities when these medications are prescribed for pre-teens. What do you think?

Without a doubt they should be talked about. even with adults they need to be.
Melissa.
I think Dr. Phil will be airing a show about the subject in his new season.I read that on Twitter. But I would like to know also.

I have seen some that say may cause suicidal
thoughts in teens. I don't think drs. want any
one to be on them very long, but I have to have
something to cope. I no doubt would have lost
my mind by now. Sludge
I was just thinking, don't they say not to give to kids under the age of 18?Do they give kids under that age anti-depressants the same kind as adults take.OMGoodness.I am like Sludge I have to take them and it is so addicting.

I agree with you all that sometimes they are needed. I take clonazepam as need for sleep. I was disappointed to find out they are highly addictive. As adults we have a better grasp on the dangers but was wondering about the wisdome of prescribing to pre-teens. Seems if the parents are not fully informed, a lot of them would opt for the meds to control the child rather than take time to work through the problems with love and understanding (when possible). Before you know it the child is addicted and who's to blame? The doctor who didn't fully inform the parents of the side effects and possible addiction or the parents who took the easy way out? Thanks for your input.
I'd like to weigh in on the side of the parents. I have a son (God bless him) who, if I don't kill him first, will be 18 on Tuesday. After we separated, Thomas seemed to escalate. the anger and sadness were even worse than they had been due to his Autism. I started giving him a low dose of the anti-depressant I was taking. It took the edge off and he was able to take his exams and finish school. I went to his pediatrician, and she recommended a psychiatrist. the psychiatrist gave me the name of a psychologist. Thomas takes an anti-depressant as well as seeing a dr. once a week and the psychiatrist every six weeks. It has changed our lives for the better. This medication saved my life. I do not speak for everyone, only for us. bobbie
Thanks for the parental input Bobbie. I know you're responsible enough to judge what was needed in your situation. I might have told you once before that I think you make some wise decisions in raising your children. OK, maybe told you twice.
I think this would be a wonderful idea I am a 30 year old woman who is taking antidepressents and I am pregnant I would like to get some info on the side effects on my unborn child and what to expect.
I'd also like to know the effects on pregnancy antidepressants have...I've heard all kinds of info and not sure which is true. This would make a great show topic kimkimd
