Hope there are some animal trainers out there to help. I adopted a young dog from the shelter. She was great, didn't chew anything, took meds for kennel cough like a dream and was quick to trust me.
Last night I opened the kitchen door to let her out, and another much larger dog rushed to get in (she has no manners and won't wait her turn lol). Well, the new dog attacked. And I mean ATTACKED! The larger dog tried not to fight back and Chloe hung on biting and growling through 3 rooms. I followed trying to separate them by hitting Chloe with a flyswatter and telling her "NO". Finally, the big girl bit back and broke thing up just enough that I could help her escape outside.
What was going through my mind was the new dog wanted to kill the older one. I waited about 4 hours and let Chloe out again thinking she had calmed down by then. I live in the country and the dogs are free to roam the property. Well, as soon as I let Chloe out she tracked down the big girl and attacked again. I finally got her in the house again where she attacked her image in the oven door. Wow! I got out a broom handle and kept it by my bed in case she did something really stupid. At 5am, she spied the big girl on the porch and woke me with her growling and attempts to get out to get the other dog.
At first I thought Chloe was being protective and had thought the other dog's rush in was an attack on me. Now I wonder if she has a serious problem and what she may do if human company comes to my house.
How can I fix this? Is it fixable? Please, I need input.

Well is the big dog your's also ? The smaller dog probably has the im a big dog inside attitude. We had the same problem when we first brough our 2nd dog in even though we brought Roxy to the shelter to meet with Hailey all was well a few nights in BAM FIGHT in the middle of our living room but I made a HUGE mistake i attempted to break them up not smart. i ended up getting my hand ripped open litterally i could see the bone littler dogs bites can be just as bad as big dogs. after that i started trying them together slowly and they became so close they even slept together. I never ever hit my dogs. you can take the dog out of the wild but never the wild out of the dog.
good luck
Thank you both for your comments. I have tried getting them close together while Chloe is on a leash and she still goes crazy. Big runs away and Chloe is so upset she comes in the house and attacks her image in the oven door again. I talked to a dog trainer and the shelter I got her from and they both say to take her back.
Big ( the other dog) came to me 5 years ago after she had been shot. It took me 2 years to get her to come to me when I called. I can't let the new member of the family hurt her in hopes of some day getting along.
I do appreciate your input.

We had this crazy dog named Sparky who we got from the kennel. He and Jack got along fine. It was Thomas he had a problem with. We took him back after six months. He was biting Thomas and it got bad. He could not be trained. i am afraid you will have to return Chloe. Pretty name. Luke is crazy, but he adores Thomas. I say, Where's your Thomas? and he goes on a search mission. It is a beautiful thing. Good luck with that!
Hi Oddone what kind of dog is Chloe ? if she attacks her image maybe they used her as a guard dog ?? sorry your going through this

It's a dominance issue! Whenever you have more than one animal
they have to fight out who is more dominant. I don't think they
actually hurt each other, I know it sounds like it. (was there any
Blood) My dogs did this, one was already in the home and he didn't
like the other coming into his territory. But after a few scraps, they
were an are best friends. Hope this helped. Sludge
Thanks all. The vet said she was about 1 year old and she is part blue heeler. The trainer says heelers are very aggressive. I tried 5 or 6 times yesterday to get her to accept "Big" ( the other dog ) to no avail. Tried again this morning. Big stands quietly as Chloe sniffs her as if to say she is no threat. But after a few seconds of sniffing, Chloe lunges and attacks. I am returning her today and taking a letter that I hope they put on her cage telling anyone who looks at her what a good dog she can be and the best type of home for her. Bobbie, I think she would bite children too. I included that in the letter. I hope she finds a good home.

I think you are making the best choice. Some dogs are just meant to be the only one in the house. You can't risk your other children's health for a stranger, albeit a cute stranger. You are a good woman for looking to do what is right for all concerned. B
Dear Sludge. I am sorry you didn't understand the gravity of the situation I spoke of. This was not a dominance issue. It was an issue of predatory behavior by the new dog! I have seen many struggles for dominance, none of them involved drawing blood or having one dog actually track another trhough 18 acres of woods just to ATTACK it. I have never seen this behavior from a domestic animal in my entire 65 years!! I returned her to the shelter this morning with a letter for those who wish to adopt her. I don't think she could be trusted with children either. But she is a loving, well behaved dog under the right circumstances.
