About Me
I am an elected official who works with attorneys, engineers, contractors and constituents on an almost daily basis for over 30 years A secondary school teacher, I work as a substitute teacher about 4 days per week, in variety of subject areas. I have numerous minor health problems, yet I am in good shape in many ways because of regular exercise, no smoking, no excessive drinking and getting adequate sleep.

My wife invited me to join in because we both watch and discuss health related programs. A particular goal for me is to stay off medication unless necessary and to improve weight and cholesterol readings. I am fascinated by the dynamics of the obesity epidemic, even more so since I visited Omaha city hall and saw a large panoramic of an Omaha street scene taken in the mid 30's. It showed downtown Omaha near the lunch hour and the street was filled with people, not cars, and they were carrying sack lunches in many cases. The pedestrians were all so thin! I understand that it was not uncommon to walk a few miles to work (yeah, when I was a kid I walked to school everyday, since I started kindergarten, over a mile each way- my dad walked 5 miles each way!). I believe obesity is a lifestyle disease and our cultural changes have recently hit "critical mass" (no pun intended) where the sum total of our physical activity has been so reduced and our eating habits so enhanced (1930's people weren't subjected to a constant barrage of food related commercials)that weight gain is almost a given. So that is my focus and interest.
