I would like to hear your opinion about what you think I should do with my shoulder problems.
I suffer from chronic shoulder injuries. I was a fenominal athlete playing at high competitive levels. Over the years my body has finally took its toll on me. I have had mulitiple shoulder injuries due to several collisions, over use of my joints and Hyperlaxity I have in my joints. Is there a pill/surgical procedure that I could take to reduce/fix the Hyperlaxity in my joints? I am 20 years old ONLY, and was told by my doctor I have a body of an 80 year old due to the wear and tear my joins have sustained over the years. I was playing on high school teams, college teams and USA sport teams while growing up. Just last year i had to retire from sports because my body could no longer take the beating. I went to get a couple doctor's opinions and some of them say They would do the surgery and some would say No to surgery. Sports was my life and Its devistating to have to "retire" from sports at such a early age. I was wondering if I could get your guy's opinions and see if there is anything you guys could help me with.
My shoulders problems have caused me to limit my activites, retire from my police career, and could possibly retire me from my paramedic job (even this job is pretty strenious on my shoulders and i dont know how long ill last in this medical field), I suffer from chronic pain in my shoulder, lots of grinding, poping and shifting of my bones in my shoulder! A couple of my doctors says they have never seen a shoulder like mine with many disorders in the shoulder, even my own physical therapist gave up on me and said my shoulder is too complicated to work with.
CAN YOU LET ME KNOW THE KIND OF SURGURIES YOU GUYS HAD ON YOURSELF AND LET ME KNOW IF THE SURGERY WAS WORTH IT OR IF YOU REGRET THE SURGERY.
The types of surguries I would possibly need, is AC repair, Labrum repair, and other various ligament/tissue repairs. I also have nerve damage in my shoulder- nerve impingment. well that should give you a rough estimate on how much damage I have in my shoulders. hopefully this helps and hopefully you guys can help me out
thanks

Hey, sorry to hear about your shoulder pain. You said you have nerve impingement, and I know that there are chiropractors out there that deal with extremity adjusting, I just thought i'd mention that for you to try. Chiropractors are trained to locate and correct the cause of nerve compression. It is non invasive and you may find some relief without the extreme of surgery. I had knee surgery when i was younger to repair my meniscus and ACL, 7 yrs. later I am having alot of grinding, popping, and unsupportivness in that knee. Not much pain though thank goodness, but the joint will neverbe the same. Now I suppose I am glad i had the procedure because i was young and very active, and every time my knee slipped because of the tear, it was excruciatingly painful. Good luck!
i can handle the nerve impingement problem cuz losing sensation in my arm doesnt "hurt", its the constant poping, grinding and shifting that really erritates me.
Do the doctors who said no to the surgery offer any help? Surgery should be a last resort thing. I had both rotator cuffs torn at the same time, tendon tears in one shoulder, and ligament tears in the other. I chose PT. My therapist took his time with me (All these injuries were at the same time). He did not believe in no pain no gain. It took over a year but I have most of the use of my arms back that I had before. If your PT was rough, maybe you need another one. My doctor was pushing me for surgery but I said NOWAY and he allowed a PT to come in and help me. gooduck and God Bless. Happy Thanksgiving.
To MVJock247,Hi. Let me tell you I know how you feel being in severe pain. It started mmune disease (my body was attacking itself) n many more things you can read on my profile. Like you I was in the health care field working as a registered nurse. The last job I had really sealed my fate in working anymore. I had a slip and fall accident and ruptured discs. These past 4 years have been absolutly aweful. In 2005 I had a posterior cervical laminectomy twice, one for the first surgery and the second to fix the errors of the first. (all in a 2 week time frame. In '06, I had a anterior disectomy with fusion, now I have plates and screws in my neck. The healing process was long. I had developed fibromyalgia after my fall at work, that and the RA left me in debilitating pain. I ruptured a tendon in my foot and ankle . The only way to fix it was to, again, fuse my ankle using 3 screws. After the operation the surgeon told me, my bones has deteriorated so bad he had to use washers and bone cement to build up my bones. I asked him if he put any nuts in too, but he said no. (Now I feel like I am Home Depot and will start picking up radio stations -lol). I told my husband if I die before he does to cremate me and use the screws to build a house-lol. I am still in severe pain and depressed that my job was taken away.
It is very hard to say to get surgery since you know your body best. The best thing to do is to get more opinions from other specialists in the field. Constant pain and worrying about being healthy enough for your job compound each other. You are so young and if you are thinking about the future with children please look into everything possible so you can hold your child if you have one. I am wishing you the absolute best and will keep you in my prayers. Have a happy holiday. Hope this helped.
I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago..Until then i was suffering daily. I finally broke down and had the shoulder arthroscopy and capsular shrinkage and OMG WAS IT THE MOST WONDERFUL THING IN THE WORLD??? YES YES YES...YOU SHOULD READ ABOUT THOSE PROCEDURES....id love to give you more insight,,let me know
hey thanks you all for your help! to answer some of your guy's questions, no my doctors have not given me any pain relievers other than to say i need to go to a PT and do my shoulder exersizes to get those "little" muscles "strong" again and all that garabe talk. My little muscles are "strong" now, and i dont see any improvment. My doctors said if i got my muscles strong, hes "reconsider" surgery. so he says. but he's the orthopedic surgeon for the Mn TWIns and he and his screw are prretty conservative docs, and will wait to do surgery at the last minute. thats stupid. i have plenty of friends that have had successful shoulder surgerys and are functionging just fine. it frusterates me to hear them get back to normal, to some extent....
My PT gave up on me which was devistating. and one of the two doctors i saw is conservative and didnt want to do my surgery. but the other doctor said he would but my Parents didnt like the doctor that said yes to the surgery. wow lame.
I am hypermobile in my shoulders. isnt that the samething as hyper laxity?
Citizen is right. Shhe knows more about this than i do. Ididn't have the same condition that I did. Do you think your PT was too aggressive?
hey citizen, what is your specality? thanks for the encouragment on doing my shoulder exersizes bahahahhaha. yah doing the exersizes may make the shoulder feel more "stable" but it still wont fix the torn ligaments/previous seperation injuries. i rather take the aggressive approach and do something about it so if the surgery "doesnt" work, i could at least say, well we tried.... yes talk to your brother at the U and let me know what he says.... ask him if he knows my doctor, Daniel Buss. also i dont want to really go to the mayo clinic because that takes time, whcih i dont have. I just want a good doctor to do the surgery, far as taking pills, i not so faund of taking pills. hell i didnt take pills after i had my wisdom teeth out! infact it didnt even hurt and i was chewing solid foods 7 hours AFTER my surgery!
i have a high pain tolerance. but anyways my shoulders arnt in PAIN PAIN. they just verrrrrrry irritating with all the shifting, poping and grinding and loss of sensation at times! i try not to do overhead activites which helps with my pain. Bascially i so frusterated with my shoudlers and doctors, i cry a lot and reflect on how I had to quit my dream job and quit playing college sports because lame ass doctors havnt done surgery on it and my lame PT gave up on me cuz my shoulders were too "complicated". and horsecrazy, i dont think my PT was "agressive" enough, only cuz he gave up on me after the 3rd week of seeing him. but even i dont think good PT will make the shoulder "better". i want to think good/agressive Physical therapy may help the shoulder get to a place where the conservative doctor may want to operate on it. since the doctor says my shoulder is too "bad" for the surgery right now....
citizen, i seen a couple of doctors! one says yes to surgery the other one says no.....
